Each year, the Division of Learning and Teaching Support and Innovation (LTSI) coordinates the distribution of grant funds that support UVic educators to design and implement course and curricular reforms in their disciplines.
Grants are adjudicated by a community of peers, including faculty, sessional instructors, and educational leaders from across the university. Applicants are eligible for up to $7,500 and have two years to complete their proposed projects. We are excited to support the allocation of over $150,000 in grant funds to 25 recipients this academic year.
2023/24 Grant Recipients
Strategic Initiative Indigenous (SI-I) Grant
This grant supports learning and teaching reconciliation initiatives that develop opportunities for students to gain a better understanding of Indigenous peoples, history and culture, and the impact of colonization.
This year’s grantees will engage in reconciliation initiatives in a range of disciplines. Projects will incorporate local Indigenous knowledge keepers, Elders, and land defenders into on-campus classes and increase the recognition of contributions by Indigenous peoples in fields from Social Work to Chemistry. Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Grant
This grant supports empirical research that aims to improve teaching and learning while promoting an interactive community of scholars. For the 2023/24 academic year, recipients’ projects come from a diversity of disciplines including English, Psychology, and Computer Engineering and will endeavour to improve students’ learning journeys by integrating play and immersive experiences. This grant supports learning and teaching initiatives that internationalize curriculum by integrating global and intercultural perspectives. Some grant recipients will undertake projects that focus on the unique experiences of international students while others will expand course content to incorporate international experiences. Open Educational Resource (OER) Grant
Offered in partnership with UVic Libraries, this grant supports learning and teaching initiatives that adopt, adapt, or develop open educational resources. Course Design/Redesign (CDR) Grant
Through this grant, recipients are supported in the design of a new course or a redesign of an existing course. Funds are further used for their implementation. Recipients are encouraged to use pedagogically innovative ways to fill gaps in existing curriculum. This year’s projects emerge from a range of disciplines and integrate aspects of Universal Design for Learning, community engagement, and experiential learning. Anti-Racism Initiative (ARI) Grant
The Anti-Racism Initiative Grant supports learning and teaching initiatives that integrate principles of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion while engaging students in anti-racism awareness and work. This year’s projects look both back and forward, highlighting the histories of racialized people in Canada and integrating anti-racism into cities of the future.
