About the program

The LIFT Program supports UVic instructors at all stages of their teaching careers. LIFT offers a comprehensive mix of workshops, development pathways, and the formal LIFT Certificate in Post-Secondary Teaching, aligned with UVic’s commitments to accessibility, Indigenization, and generative AI readiness. Whether you are new to teaching or looking to deepen your scholarly and reflective practice, LIFT provides the structure, community, and tools to advance your teaching.

Program overview

The program is a blended program that combines self-paced learning, interactive workshops, reflective practice, pper discussions, and structured professional development.

Participants may:

  • Complete the full certificate over one academic year (option to extend to 18 months), or
  • Take individual workshops or courses.

Apply core pedagogical principles grounded in learning science, inclusive design, and decolonizing approaches

Design lessons, courses, and assessments aligned with learning outcomes

Foster inclusive and accessible learning environments

Integrate learning technologies intentionally

Develop a reflective teaching documentation

Build foundational reflective teaching skills

Certificate overview

The LIFT Certificate consists of five required courses (with an in-person workshops component) and two additional in-person workshops from the LTI offerings combining asynchronous preparation with in-person learning.

Course Descriptions

Fundamentals of Course Design

Asynchronous | 4 hours + 90 min workshop
Covers learner-centred design, constructive alignment, outcomes, and inclusive assessment.

Technology Enhanced Teaching

Asynchronous | 3 hours + 120 min workshop
Explores purposeful integration of technology for interaction, flexibility, and access.

The Science of Learning

Asynchronous | 3 hours + 120 min workshop
Examines cognitive load, memory, metacognition, and implications for teaching.

Elective: Contemporary Teaching Practices 

Live or blended elective in topics such as accessibility, large class engagement, or generative AI. Choose any two 2 workshops according to your needs and interests. Offered at three levels: Fundamentals → Foundations → Advanced.

Professional Development Course (choose one according to your needs)

Asynchronous (3 hours) + 90 min workshop
Options include: Teaching Dossier Development, Peer Review of Teaching Training; Lesson Study: The power of feedback.

Introduction to Scholarly Teaching & Capstone Project

Asynchronous (3 hours) + 2 90 min workshops + capstone project
Introduces foundation Scholarly Teaching and SoTL principles, ethics, and small-scale inquiry design. 

Capstone can either include a short SoTL project plan or a scholarly teaching case study. 

Program materials

All program materials are provided in Brightspace, including self-paced modules, workshop details, templates, reflecdtion prompts and capstone project guidance. Participants retain access after completion of the program.

Program requirements

To receive the certificate, participants must:

Complete all five courses (with their specific in-person workshops) and two additional workshops

Submit required reflecdtions and tasks in all courses

Participate in workshops and preparatory activities

Complete the Reflective Teaching Capstone Project
