Learners’ answers are not saved and cannot be reviewed
Brightspace self assessments allow learners to reflect and get “in the moment” low-stakes feedback on their knowledge, course progress, readiness for an upcoming test or assignment, etc.
Note: Responses are not saved. Self assessments are not graded and have no point value. Instructors can see whether or not a student has compelted a self-assessment completion but no responses are saved.
Why use self-assessments?
- Provide low-stakes (no-stakes) formative assessment with automatic feedback and tips
- Provide an opportunity for guided reflection
- Help students monitor their own comprehension and grasp of the course material at a specific point in time.

Question feedback and hints
Self-assessments look very similar to a quiz and uses questions from the question bank (although no grade is provided).
There are a number of ways to provide feedback:
- Give feedback for every question response. Use feedback that provides a basis for improving content comprehension (e.g. rather than just correct or incorrect).
- In some question types (like multiple choice), you can also provide different feedback for each answer choice within the question
- Use question hints to suggest how to approach a question. Enable hints when you create the self assessment.
