Brightspace offers the option for students, peers, and instructors in a course to email each other for learning, teaching, community, and collaboration purposes. All communications must adhere to the policies for the appropriate use of Brightspace (please refer to the Brightspace terms and conditions).
Connect with peers and instructors in Brightspace
In Brightspace, you can connect with an individual (e.g., peer or instructor), a group (e.g., for a project or study group) or the class (e.g., sharing course presentations).
Send an email to an individual (e.g., instructor, TA or peer)
To email an individual class participant/specific people from the Classlist tool:
- Select Classlist from the navigation bar.
- Click the drop-down menu icon next to the name of the person you wish to contact and click “Send Email”. If you are emailing several people at once, select the checkboxes next to their names and click “Email” at the top of the Classlist table.
- Type your message in and hit “Send”.
Note: Your online status will always display as offline in the Classlist unless you enable this feature in your profile settings.
Send an email to a group
- Select Classlist from the navigation bar.
- Use the “View By” drop-down menu at the top to choose the specific section/group you need to contact. Click “Apply” and use the “Groups” drop-down menu and “Apply” to filter by section/group.
- Click the checkbox at the top of the Classlist table to select all group members (as needed), then click “Email”.

Send an email to the class
- Select Classlist from the navigation bar.
- Click the “Email Classlist” button near the top, then “Send Email” at the bottom of the page.

Students should confirm with their instructors before messaging the class to determine whether the email is appropriate for the course.
Manage your name & email
Students can control the name and email displayed within Brightspace on your UVic MyPage. You don’t need to disclose a personal email address if you prefer not to. UVic recommends that you use your uvic.ca email address for university activity.
Appropriate use of Brightspace
When you interact within the university community and with UVic’s online learning resources, you are subject to university policies and expectations including:
- Online Student Conduct for respectful and supportive learning environments
- Non-academic Misconduct
- Acceptable use of Electronic Information Resources (including using Brightspace for non-University communication, or sending mass communications without appropriate authorization).
