Use Zoom features to break up a long class session and guide different types of interactive activities. There are a few ways students can participate in a session:
- Raise Hand. In the participants window, students can click the raise hand icon. When you see a raised hand icon in the participant list, you can acknowledge the student and they can un-mute their mic to ask a question.
- Chat. Zoom has a chat window where you and students can type comments. For example, ask an open ended question and ask students to type their responses.
- Reactions. Participants can react to content during a session by clicking the Reactions. button at the bottom of the screen and sending a thumbs up or clapping icon. Reactions will disappear after 5 seconds. Similarly, students can use other non-verbal interactions
- Conduct Polls. Set up polls (in advance or on the fly) the same way you’d use clicker questions to introduce a new section of a lecture. You can use a max of 25 polls per session. Plan to re-use polls for a different section? Save them as a template. We suggest scheduling your Zoom sessions through the Brightspace interface and then visiting uvic.zoom.us to create the polls for your scheduled sessions.
- Annotation. Share your screen and invite students to annotate what is on the screen by drawing or writing text. Note: check your settings to make sure you have allowed students to edit first.
