In Brightspace, there are two main ways instructors can bring previous content over to new sites. This page will provide you with an overview of both. In most cases, you will copy course components (e.g., when reusing content from a previous course in your new site). In some cases you may find export/import helpful. Visit this comparison chart, which provides details of the differences between these options.
Copy course components
Copy Components allows you to copy a whole course (or select components) from one course site into another site. In order to copy, you must be an instructor (or program administrator) in both sites.
Here are some examples for when you may use copy components:
- At the start of a semester, copy content from a previous term to a newly created and empty course site.
- Copy a course template into your site so you don’t need to start from scratch
- If you are teaching multiple course sections (and have chosen not to cross-list your course), create all the content in one course section site and then copy the content into the other sections and sites.
How to copy course components
This one-and-a-half-minute video explains how to copy course components from one course to another.
- Access the Brightspace course page you wish to copy content to.
- Select the cog wheel in the top right corner next to your name and select Import/Export/Copy Components, or select Course Tools in the blue navigation bar, navigate to Course Admin, and then select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Click on the Copy Components from another Org Unit button and then click on Search for Offerings button.
- On the Select Course Offering window, search for the course you want to copy content from. When you see the course in the list, click the button to the left of the course name and then click the Add Selected button. You will be returned to the Import/Export/Copy Components window.
- Choose either Copy All Components to copy over all the course components or Select Components to choose which components to copy over.
-
- If you choose Copy All Components, the copying process will automatically begin and you will be notified when the copying is complete.
- If you select Select Components, you will be walked through which items you wish to copy over. Click Continue until you can select the Finish button. A page will appear showing you the progress of the copying.
-
- After you are finished, you can navigate away from the page using the View Content button to see what was copied over. Note: If you copied over announcements, they will be visible to learners until they are deleted. Please refer to the documentation on deleting/restoring announcements for more information.
Import / Export course components
Import / Export Components allows you to copy a whole course (or select components) from one course site into another site. This is best used in situations where you are not an instructor in both courses (e.g. you are sharing content with another person) or when you are moving a course package from another system to UVic’s Brightspace.
How to import course components
This short one-and-a-half minute video walks you through the steps of importing components from one course to another.
- In the course site that you want to import components into, select the cog wheel in the top right corner next to your name and select Import/Export/Copy Components, or select Course Tools in the blue navigation bar, navigate to Course Admin, and then select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- On the Import/Export/Copy Components page, scroll down and select Import Components. You can then choose whether to add components from the Learning Object Repository on Brightspace or from a course package (usually a .zip file on your device).
- Click Start.
- Select the file you want to import from your device.
- Choose either Import All Components to import all file content or choose Advanced Options to specify what you would like to import. You can select Go Back or Cancel at any time.
-
- If you selected Advanced Options, choose the components you want to import by checking the relevant boxes and then select Continue twice.
-
- Once your content has imported, you can select View Content to see the items, import another course package using the Import Another Package button, or review and manage course dates by clicking Review and Manage Dates.
Please note the following:
-
- If you are bringing over content from a different Brightspace course, you will want to navigate to the course first and use the Export Components feature to save the necessary content before using the Import Components feature in the new course. See the following section for instructions on how to export course components.
- If you import course components with names that already exist in the course, or you import multiple components with the same name, duplicate names will appear but these components are not overwritten. For example, if your course contains a discussion topic called “Exam Review” and you import a course package that contains a discussion topic called “Exam Review”, your course will contain two separate discussion topics called “Exam Review”.
- If you select Advanced Options in step 5, you can change this default setting to overwrite the existing file by scrolling down to the “When an existing file is encountered” setting and selecting the “Overwrite the existing file” button, then clicking Continue.
