Violeta Iosub engages Chemistry 231: Introduction to Organic Chemistry students through different modalities (e.g., through vision, hearing, and touch) and in formats that they can adjust according to their accessibility needs. For instance, Iosub uses an Augmented Reality (AR) app called MoleculAR, developed by the UVic Chemistry department (Scott McIndoe and Julia Levy). This app enables students to enlarge, rotate, and manipulate AR representations of molecules to facilitate their understanding of molecular structures (1.1). Iosub integrates QR codes into lectures for easy access to the AR models and provides aural and written instructional support for using the app. Digital models are complemented with tangible physical molecular models that offer tactile learning experiences. This is particularly beneficial for students with visual disabilities and those who may find it challenging to conceptualize the 3D structures mentally (1.3). These models are available for interactive use during lectures and accessible during exams, catering to diverse learning needs. Iosub also encourages students to use available resources to build their own models to enhance their grasp of molecular structures.
