This article explains how to view and edit transcripts in Echo360 and how to publish transcripts as closed captions (subtitles)

About video transcripts

Video transcripts and closed captions create more universally accessible and inclusive learning experiences. Before you start, this overview provides important information about captioning / transcription services available at UVic and recommendations for their use

Transcripts in Echo360

Videos are automatically transcribed using Amazon’s Transcribe service.

Transcripts are:

  • Automatically available for students approximately 30 minutes after video is uploaded (transcript processes separately and after the video has processed)
  • Searchable – students can search for key terms in the transcript
  • Interactive –  students  are able to click on phrases to navigate to a specific point in the video
  • Not automatically published as closed captions; that needs to be done manually and as part of the transcript editing process

Edit the transcript

Echo360 provides a robust transcript editor that can be found on the video in your personal Echo library or in the Echo course in Brightspace. Visit Echo360’s guide on editing the transcript for step by step instructions.

Editing the transcript makes it possible to:

After you are done, select “Save as New Version” to save your changes to a new transcript. Remember to apply the transcript to CC after making any changes.

Please note, instructors and faculty members are not required to edit captions and transcripts, see guidance on editing transcripts.

Allow or assign others to edit the transcript

If you have added Echo360 as a course link to your Brightspace site, instructors, supplementary instructors and teaching assistants in your course will be able to edit media published to the course, including transcripts.

It is also possible to allow students to edit transcripts. This may be more appropriate in some contexts than others.  For step by step instructions, see Allowing students to edit transcripts for class published media.

Enabling captions on a video

It’s recommended to apply your transcripts as closed captions for your video.

To do this, navigate to the transcript editor and select “Apply to CC”.

If you have allowed students to edit the transcript (see “Allow others to edit the transcript”), they will also be able to apply the transcript as closed captions.

For more information, visit Applying Updated Transcripts as Closed Captions.

Deleting the transcript and captions

Transcripts and captions improve accessibility and support learning so it’s recommended they not be removed unless absolutely necessary. If it is required, visit Echo360’s guide on deleting transcripts for step by step instructions.
