Brightspace offers participants the possibility to communicate with one another by means of two communication systems, Instant Messages and Email. Both options are available by clicking the Message alerts icon in the alerts menu. While instant messages will only be available within Brightspace, the email option will send a message to a participant’s email inbox (to the address that is recorded in Brightspace under Notifications).

However, it is possible to disable this option during a quiz to restrict communication among students within Brightspace.
1. First navigate to Quizzes through the Course Tools dropdown menu. Then expand the drop down menu for the quiz in question and click Edit.

2. Select the Properties tab.

3. Scroll down to Optional Advanced Properties and select Disable Email, Instant Messages and alerts.

4. Click Save and Done to save your changes.
