The aim of the Academic Integrity Week is to provide you with a framework that you can use to implement within your courses to ensure that students adhere to the standards set by UVic regarding academic integrity. The program will be available in late September. Look for sessions and activities for all interested in academic integrity – students, faculty, staff, and all instructors at UVic.
You can register for the session through Learning Central. Search by title to find the upcoming session or browse our upcoming sessions on our workshops and events page.
Setting a Code of Conduct in your Course
In this session, a panel of instructors will share their strategies in setting a code of conduct in their classroom and how they informed their students about academic integrity, such as signing an academic integrity pledge. It is important that students are made explicitly aware of what your expectations are in their academic performance. Holding high expectations is essential to upholding UVic’s academic integrity policy.
Assessment Strategies that Uphold Academic Integrity
Clear intended learning outcomes aligned with assessment, provide students with guidance as to what they are expected to demonstrate in their learning. Ensuring that students have clarity about what is expected of them in all assessment pieces, alleviates the stress that leads students to engage in academic integrity violations. You will leave this session with the knowledge of how to align your intended learning outcomes with your assessment so that students do not resort to academic misconduct.
When you suspect a breach of UVic’s Policy on Academic Integrity
No matter which area you teach in, sooner or later you are likely to receive assignments that breach the principles of academic integrity. You may suspect, be certain or have unquestionable evidence that plagiarism or other types of practices involving unacknowledged work have taken place. How do you approach a case in a way that follows UVic’s institutional policy to ensure that possible penalties are appropriate? What is your role as an instructor? How do you document the case and who do you communicate with? Who makes decisions? In this session we will look at the steps mandated by the policy on academic integrity. We will also discuss how this fits within an academic integrity framework that focuses on a balanced approach to education and disciplinary process.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I suspect a violation of academic integrity in my class?
UVic has a policy on Academic Integrity, which you can find in both the undergraduate and the graduate academic calendars. The policy addresses the main types of academic integrity violations, as well as procedures for dealing with these. Please review the policy before acting on any allegation.
Who should I contact if the policy does not address the violations I am experiencing in my classroom, or am unsure whether to approach a student to discuss a violation or possible penalty?
Your chair or director should be your first contact if you are suspecting a violation. An instructor documents a violation, but does not make decisions. It is also important that a violation is treated as an allegation until “a determination is made that compelling information exists to support the allegation …”.
Where can I get guidance on the UVic approach to academic integrity beyond policy regulations?
The Academic Integrity Framework explains how UVic supports a culture of academic integrity.
Are there additional supports to help build a culture of academic integrity in the classroom?
You have the option of adding an academic integrity pledge on your syllabus or directly on the Brightspace setup of assignments. There is also a student-focused Integrity Matters course on Brightspace. Self-enrolment is open to all students. The course is based on scenarios related to the principles of academic integrity and can be taken independently or made into an assignment. UVic also has other resources on academic integrity that are updated regularly.
