Who we are

The Instructors of First Year Courses Working Group (IFYC-WG) was originally established in 2014 by the Provost, in recognition that instructors of first year courses serve a special role in students’ successful transition to academic life at UVic. Our community of practice meets regularly to discuss challenges and strategies specific to first year courses and student success.

Join our working group

The IFYC-WG welcome instructors (sessional instructors and faculty) from across the campus community who teach first year students at UVic and are committed to:

  1. meeting colleagues across campus and participating in a community of practice that supports instructors of first year courses;
  2. collaborating to develop and share instructional strategies and pedagogies to support student success in their transition to university;
  3. tackling issues specific to both large and small first year courses;
  4. collaborating to solve challenges that are sometimes unique to student success in first year; and
  5. contributing to larger institutional policy and planning around student success in first year.
