UVic is striving to be a leader in Canada in experiential learning. Strategy 3.1 (Intensify Dynamic Learning states) of UVic’s Strategic Framework commits to extend UVic’s expertise and leadership in experiential learning so that every student has the opportunity to engage in, and be recognized for, research, work-integrated, community-engaged or other forms of experiential learning.
The Experiential Learning Series is a set of five workshops that explores strategies to help you achieve this goal, with a particular focus on research-enriched, community-engaged and field based approaches to experiential learning. If you attend the whole series (all five sessions) you will be awarded a certificate of completion – a great addition to your dossier that indicates your commitment to professional development and to enhancing your performance as an instructor. In each of these sessions you will have an opportunity to apply what you’ve learned to your own teaching, both through practice and planning. All workshops will take place in HHB 128, unless otherwise noted.
You can register for all the following workshops on Learning Central. Search by title to find the upcoming session or browse our upcoming sessions on our workshops and events page.
Introduction to Experiential Learning
This session will define experiential learning, showing the breadth and depth of the various forms and attributes of experiential learning that are possible within and outside your class. We will discuss the role of the instructor in experiential learning, consider different ways to embed experiential learning in your course(s) and explore the benefits and issues of implementing experiential learning. We will dive into which forms of experiential learning may be best suited to particular learning objectives, contexts, courses, etc. We will discuss role-play, simulation, project-based, field-based, community-engaged and research-enriched activities.

Relationship-building and scaffolding in Experiential Learning
Are students ready for the experience I am imagining in my course? How do I work with the internal and/or external community in a way that fosters student learning and supports reciprocal and respectful relationships? This session will explore the diverse relationships, both internal and external to UVic, that can support experiential learning in all its forms. This will include exploring (through discussion and role-play) how to move from an instructor/student relationship of “stage on the sage” to one of “guide on the side”.

Facilitation and the Reflective Process in Experiential Learning
There are three essential components of experiential learning: practice, theory and reflection (known in some disciplines as analysis). How do you facilitate effective experiential learning within and outside the classroom? And how do you get students to learn and demonstrate their learning through reflection? How do you prepare students for experiential learning? We will discuss diverse approaches to facilitating experiential learning and the reflective process, explore how to tailor reflection to your students’ level and your course content, and practice these approaches.

Assessment for Experiential Learning
How do you assess experiential learning? When designing assessment for experiential learning, you want to ensure that you assess both the learning process and product. The aim is to use ‘authentic assessment’. Authentic assessment resembles the experience. Therefore, the context, task assigned, and the type of assessment used all need to be directly related to the experience. In this session we will explore the varying forms of assessment, how to align with learning outcomes, how to use rubrics, and how to apply to your course.
