Teaching Squares bring together four instructors from different disciplines in a teaching observation and sharing activity. It facilitates the sharing of successful and innovative teaching methods and ideas, and contributes to fostering a campus culture of ongoing reflection and improvement in teaching practice (Moorse & Moore, 2006). It was originally created by Anne Wessely from St. Louis Community College to encourage instructors to reflect on what can be learned about one’s own teaching by observing colleagues. It differs from traditional teaching observations because it does not involve feedback to others but rather requires those involved to personally reflect on how they can enhance their teaching by observing and learning from others.
Teaching squares are developed on an ongoing basis. Once an instructor initiates the request for a teaching square, the Director of Teaching Excellence will contact other instructors across campus to participate.
