How do I associate grade items with assignments?

Brightspace, Instructor Help

Method 1: How to link a gradebook item to an already existing assignment

In the case that the instructor has already created an assignment (or even added feedback), they can link it to a gradebook item without overwriting existing feedback.

  1. Go into your assignments in Brightspace and click the arrow next to the assignment you want to add to the gradebook, and select ‘Edit Assignment’. Note that unlinked assignments will not have the ribbon icon next to them.

  1. You will now be in the assignment editor. Click on the ‘Score Out Of’ and select the box that says ‘Ungraded’.

Note: If you already have a score (points) showing instead of ungraded, that’s okay… you should then see a “Not in Grade Book” drop-down menu option to the right. Select “Add to Grade Book” if you need a new grade item, or “Edit or Link to Existing” if you already have a pre-made grade item in the grade book.

  1. You will now see a pop up on your screen where you can select to either link to an existing grade item or create a new one. If you had already created a grade item prior to creating the assignment, then select the link option. Otherwise, choose ‘Ok’.

Note: If you already have a grade category for this type of assignment, under ‘Create and link’ you can add the new assignment to that category. This is helpful if, for example, you have an entire assignment category that is 20% of a student’s overall grade. When you add a new assignment, it’ll split that 20% evenly among all the assignments, including the new one, automatically.

  1. Click ‘Save and Close’. The assignment is now linked to the gradebook. If you had already added any written feedback or graded using a rubric, these items will be transferred over to the item in the gradebook. No existing evaluation or feedback on assignment submission will be overwritten or deleted.

Method 2: How to link a gradebook item to a new assignment

Note: Step 3 will vary depending on if you’ve created an item in the grade book for the new assignment or not. Both ways work and are explained.

  1. Go into your assignments in Brightspace and choose “New Assignment.”

2. You will now be in the assignment editor. Click on the ‘Score Out Of’ option and select the box that says ‘Ungraded’.

3. You will now see a pop up on your screen where you can select to either link to an existing grade item or create a new one. If you had already created a grade item prior to creating the assignment, then select the link option. Otherwise choose ‘create and link’. Select okay when complete.

  1. After that, type into the ‘Score Out Of’ box however many points you wish to grade the assignment out of.

This tutorial will show you how to associate an assignment to a grade item on the gradebook.
